About Bom Sucesso’s links with the Irish Community:
Founded in 1639, the Convent of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso in Belém holds a unique place in the shared history of Portugal and Ireland. It is widely recognised as the oldest Irish religious foundation established outside Ireland, created by Irish Dominican nuns who had fled political and religious persecution at home. With the support of the Portuguese Crown, the convent became a sanctuary for Irish women seeking safety, education, and spiritual life during a turbulent period in Irish history.
The founder was Father Dominic O’Daly from a family called O’Dalaigh of Kilkorsan in Co. Kerry. He later served as Ambassador for the new Braganza King, D. João IV in
France, and was the Confessor to the Queen, D. Luisa de Gusmão.
The new Convent was dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso. The church was only completed in 1670. Since then, it has been continuously a Community of Irish
Dominican Nuns, originally devoted to prayer and subsequently to education, a mission it has carried forward to the present day.
Bom Sucesso remains a site of profound historical significance, representing approaching four centuries of Irish presence abroad and standing as a testament to the
strength and continuity of the Irish diaspora.
